Our feeders and bird houses have become bait boxes. We’ve had a sharp shinned hawk hunting from our fence the past few days. There are some tree swallows nesting in one of the bird houses, and they get quite worked up when the hawk is nearby.
We have red tails that stop by, too, but they’re generally after the rabbits and voles.

Yeah, kind of a blur, but I think house finch seems right:

W e mainly have juncos and chickadees up here at my wife’s feeder - the juncos are rather demanding, “hey! yeah you! the feeder is already half empty!”

That’s our assumption.

They have far too boring a name for how pretty they are

I would expect to see butterflies and bees with all the flowers you have planted. We have a lot of clover in the yard and some flowers in the front and back. All are frequented by bumble bees, honey bees, and the occasional butterfly.

I spotted a yellow finch briefly one day. It’s been fun watching them, though they are slobs, throwing seed everywhere. We also have some hummingbird feeders. Fixing up the garden, hanging that bird feeder, enjoying the yard... all sewn into a lockdown silver lining.

We could use a hawk that eats moles. Is there something you could do to discourage the hunters? Better a hawk predator than a cat.

Before I hung that feeder, I’d first considered putting up a bird house, but my wife held out for a feeder because she thought it would be more interesting. I think she was correct about that.

Where is Up Here? I wouldn’t mind some more variety at our feeder, but I’m enjoying the finches.

western Washington state, kinda NE of Seattle - we do have a few gold finches but they are pretty rare here. We have quite a few sparrows around too, but I think the juncos and chickadees kind of hog the feeder...

Same - really enjoying the time watching our neighborhood birds. The squirrels are getting a but much here now though.

They most assuredly do. I actually have an old mossberg bolt action .410 that its primary duty is squirrel removal...

My grandfather — aka Pappy — used to buy these tiny bullets that came in a metal snuff can and he’d use a tweezer to load them into his .22 and we’d plink pop cans with them. The .410 is such a cute shell; I think a revolver that fired them would be fun. Would be great for varmint. Or a .17 hmr...
But not where I live...

Taurus makes a Judge line of revolvers that fire both 45 and 410. It’s fun but pretty inaccurate unless really close. They’re a good snake gun but that’s about it.
22 shorts are really small and good for quiet operation in suburb type places, they’re almost as quiet as an air rifle. You have to have a pretty big yard for them though.
I have a 17 HMR bolt action rifle and it is a lot of fun to shoot.
